Money is one of the most talked-about topics in the Bible. It is mentioned over 2,000 times. Yet many Christians navigate their financial lives without ever connecting their faith to their finances.
These 10 verses changed the way I think about money, stewardship, and retirement. I hope they do the same for you.
1. Proverbs 21:5 “The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want.” Retirement planning is an act of diligence, and diligence is a biblical virtue.
2. Luke 14:28 “For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?” Jesus himself endorsed financial planning. Budgeting is wisdom and spiritually sound.
3. Proverbs 13:11 “Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.” Get-rich-quick schemes are nothing new. Slow, steady wealth-building is God’s model.
4. Matthew 6:24 “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” This verse isn’t anti-wealth. It is anti-idolatry. Money is a tool, not a god.
5. Proverbs 22:7 “The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.” Debt-free retirement isn’t just a financial goal, it’s a freedom goal. And freedom is deeply biblical.
6. 1 Timothy 6:6-7 “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.” The foundation of a fulfilled retirement isn’t a number in an account, it’s contentment.
7. Proverbs 11:14 “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” Seeking financial advice isn’t a sign of weakness, It is smart and it is wise. Find a trusted advisor.
8. Ecclesiastes 5:10 “He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.” More money won’t fix a purpose problem. Retirement requires both financial and spiritual preparation.
9. Malachi 3:10 “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” Generosity and financial blessing are deeply connected throughout Scripture.
10. Philippians 4:19 “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Ultimately, our security doesn’t rest in our portfolio. It rests in Him.
